Tindari owes its fame both to the sanctuary of the Black Madonna and to its archaeological site. Situated at the very edge of a promontory, the sanctuary was erected over the remains of the ancient town and hosts the wooden statue of the Black Madonna. Most probably one of the many art works smuggled out of Constantinople in the 8th and 9th Centuries during the period of Iconoclasm. The church was destroyed, rebuilt and enlarged and finally enriched with spectacular mosaics. The terrace facing the sanctuary offers a captivating view overlooking the natural lakes of Marinello, the Gulf of Patti and the Aeolian islands. Not far from the church lies the archaeological site of the ancient Greek town and the remains of the famous amphitheatre, still in use for annual Greek theatre festivals during the summer months.
