Patti is one of the most important centres of the province of Messina. Archaeological remains, such as the Villa Romana of the Imperial Age, provide evidence of its ancient and noble origins. The fortified medieval town centre, with its narrow stairways and alleys, is dominated by the ancient majestic cathedral of Norman origin but rebuilt in the 18th century. In recent times, the town has greatly expanded in size and new residential complexes have been built just outside its walls, while once city life developed on the inside.
